DALEWOOD TALKS — A WEEK OF WORK THAT SPEAKS FOR ITSELF

Some weeks don’t need a buildup.

They don’t need hype.

They don’t even need an introduction.

Some weeks just walk up, slap you on the shoulder, and say:

“Pay attention — this one means something.”

This past week at DaleWood Farms was exactly that.

It wasn’t glamorous. It wasn’t quiet. It wasn’t convenient.

But it was honest, necessary, purpose-filled work — the kind that grows you even when you’re not looking.

Standing Beside a Craftsman

Saturday we stood with Ernie Verbarg at the winter market at the Boone County Fairgrounds. Watching him work reminded me what real mastery looks like. His hands move with the confidence that only comes from years of repetition. Clean cuts. Clean workflow. Respect for the animal and the customer.

Being in that environment wasn’t just about helping.

It was about learning. Absorbing. Sharpening our craft.

It was a reminder that DaleWood isn’t just growing animals — we’re building skill.

Back on the Farm, the Work Kept Coming

When we got home, we didn’t slow down.

We cut pork.

We packaged.

We cleaned.

We ground up dog food from our own animals — hearts, liver, meat, fat, all of it being used instead of wasted.

This is what a purpose-driven farm looks like.

Nothing wasted.

Everything respected.

Every animal honored through the quality of the work.

The cameras were rolling when they could be, because people don’t want staged moments — they want truth. They want to see how a real homestead operates day after day.

The Animals Had Their Own Agenda

While we processed meat, the rest of the farm moved forward whether we were ready or not.

The 9-week-old chicks took their first step into the coop with the big birds. Anyone who raises chickens knows that moment can go bad quick. But they held their ground. They found their rhythm. They reminded me that sometimes you’ve raised something sturdier than you realized.

Goats needed tending.

Dogs needed training.

Incubators needed checking.

And every species on this land taught its own lesson — whether I asked for one or not.

Teaching Without Trying to Teach

All week long, questions came in:

Why goats?

Is raw feeding safe?

How do you rotate pastures?

What’s the difference between ground goat and ground deer?

How do you integrate chicks?

And every time I answered, it hit me — DaleWood is becoming a place of education just as much as it’s a working farm. People really want to learn this lifestyle, and they want it from someone who’s actually doing the work, not reading it off Google.

That’s responsibility, but it’s also purpose.

The Week Tested Me

There were moments I felt stretched thin.

Moments I wondered if I was keeping up.

Moments where everything needed my attention at the same time.

But pressure has a way of showing you who you are and what you’re building.

What I realized this week was simple:

This wasn’t about the tasks — it was about who the tasks were shaping me into.

We’re mastering the craft.

We’re building systems.

We’re teaching openly.

We’re building community.

We’re living the mission every single day.

This week wasn’t random.

It was direction.

We’re Not Preparing Anymore. We’re Ready.

For a long time, DaleWood was in the “building” phase.

Preparing. Planning. Setting up.

But something shifted this week:

We are officially ready to serve our community.

Our freezers are set.

Our pork is packaged.

Our systems are in place.

And for the first time, we can confidently say:

We have pork available right now for purchase.

Not “soon.”

Not “hopefully.”

Not “once we get everything set up.”

Right.

Now.

And more is coming.

THE HEART OF THIS WEEK

If you carry one thing away from this week’s DaleWood Talks, let it be this:

Start where you are.

Use what you have.

The work will shape you if you let it.

This week reminded me that the work we do here isn’t small — it’s part of our legacy.

And every day we show up, we’re building something that speaks for itself.

DaleWood Farms is moving.

And we’re ready for whoever wants to walk with us.
