A Farm Mystery Cracked
While checking the nesting boxes this week, I stumbled across something that stopped me in my tracks — an egg inside another egg.
At first glance, it looked like an oversized, misshapen egg that had cracked before fully developing. But when I gently opened it, there it was — a perfectly formed smaller egg tucked neatly inside. No editing, no tricks — just one of those moments when nature reminds you she’s full of surprises.
What Causes an Egg Inside an Egg?
This rare event is known as a counter-peristalsis contraction, sometimes called a “nested egg.”
Here’s what happens:
Normally, a yolk travels down the hen’s oviduct, picking up layers of egg white, membranes, and finally a shell before being laid. But every now and then, the system hiccups — a fully formed egg gets pushed backward into the reproductive tract.
When it meets a new yolk coming down the line, the hen’s body wraps the first egg inside the second one, coating it again with albumen, membranes, and shell. The result? An “egg within an egg.”
Why It Happens
A few possible reasons:
Sudden fright or stress (a loud noise, predator nearby, or abrupt handling) A disruption in the hen’s normal laying rhythm Young hens still adjusting to their reproductive cycles Older hens whose cycles are slowing or irregular
It’s rare, harmless, and the hen usually continues laying normally afterward.
A Reminder from the Coop
Moments like these are part of what make farm life special. You think you’ve seen it all, and then nature throws you a curveball — or in this case, a double egg. It’s humbling, fascinating, and oddly beautiful.
Every day at DaleWood Farms is a lesson in patience and wonder. Sometimes, even in the most ordinary routine, you find something extraordinary waiting to be discovered.

I have never heard of the double egg. This is so amazing and wonderful to know how nature is truly full of surprises. I would love to do a field trip to your farm. I’m trying to learn more about gardening and farm life. Thank you for your service and that you do to produce good rich food for our community. Mrs. Betty Watson❤️😀🙏🏾
Betty, right? Nature will humble you every day out here. Just when you think you’ve seen it all, a hen throws you a curveball like that double egg and reminds you who’s really running the show.
We’d love to have you out to DaleWood Farms. We do field-style visits by appointment so folks can actually see, touch, and learn — not just walk past animals like a zoo. Shoot me a message whenever you’re ready to come out, and we’ll get you on the calendar.
Gardening, livestock, homesteading — we’re figuring it out one sunrise at a time, and it’s a blessing to share the journey with people who are hungry to learn, too.
