On Dalewood Farms, weāve spent the last few weeks waiting, watching, and hoping. If youāve been following along with our earlier Dalewood Talks about incubating our chicken eggs, youāll know that we set 12 eggs into the incubator. After candling them with a light a few days in, we confirmed 11 were fertilized and full of potential life.
From that moment, our family became witnesses to the quiet miracle of creation. Jerseiās eyes lit up the first time she saw an embryo shift in the glow of the candlerāalive, responsive, moving to its own hidden rhythm. It was a reminder: even the smallest signs of life hold the power to excite, inspire, and renew hope.
Waiting on Life
Over 22 days, we learned the discipline of waiting. Incubation is not fastāitās fragile, patient, and humbling. And then it happened: the cracks began, the tiny āpeepā sounds filled the air, and one by one, our chicks worked their way into the world.
But hatching is no simple process. The chickās beak has a single āegg toothā designed only for this moment, to break through the shell, piece by piece, until theyāre free. Itās slow, messy, and hard. And thatās the pointāitās lifeās very first test of resilience.
Joy and Loss
Out of 11 eggs, eight chicks hatched strong. Within a day or two, we lost one. That left us with seven in the brooder. Loss is never easy, but itās also a part of farmingāand of life. Sometimes it isnāt anyoneās fault. Sometimes it simply is.
On the farm, nothing goes to waste. What didnāt survive became food for our dogs, giving strength to another life. Itās the circle of life in motion, the same one we were taught in stories like The Lion King. Itās raw, sometimes funny, sometimes sadābut always real.
The Circle of Life
And thatās the deeper message here. These chicks remind us of the beauty and fragility of life. They remind us that birth, loss, and growth are all bound together. Whether youāve faced the heartbreak of a miscarriage, the loss of a loved one, or the daily grind of lifeās setbacksāthere are lessons here. Patience. Perseverance. Hope.
At Dalewood Farms, our mission is not just to raise animals, but to create space for healing, learning, and restoration. Farms can be therapy. The fresh air, the cycles of life, the perspectiveāthey all help us process whatās heavy and find a reset for the soul.
If youāre walking through loss or struggle, let these little chicks remind you: life is fragile, yesābut it is also resilient, determined, and meant to be lived.
Final Thoughts
Watching eggs hatch is more than a farm choreāitās a living reminder of how precious, delicate, and determined life really is. From the first tiny peep to the first day under the brooder light, itās a process that stirs something deeper in us.
We hope these little moments from our farm inspire you to reflect on your own journey. Life may not always hatch the way we expect, but when it does, itās always worth celebrating.
